Verification after asuccessful Joomla and VirtueMart upgrade

We modernise online shops on Joomla and VirtueMart: update to current versions while preserving the URL structure of categories, product pages, and information pages. Plus technical SEO, modern structured markup (without it, LLMs do not cite your information pages, and that is GEO optimisation), fixing SEO errors and Google Search Console reports, connecting Ukrainian payment gateways, and courier integrations.

When an online shop needs modernisation

  • The site runs on Joomla 3 or PHP 7.x, extensions are no longer compatible with PHP 8.1 and newer, and the site crashes or the admin panel stops working.
  • Google Search Console shows growth in "Crawled currently not indexed" pages, many other GSC errors, or Core Web Vitals "Poor" (LCP above 4 seconds, CLS above 0.25 on mobile).
  • VirtueMart does not support modern payment gateways and has received no security patches since 2025.
  • Structured markup on product and information pages does not cover current Product and FAQPage types.
  • Customers are surprised they cannot pay on the site, or you need automatic Nova Poshta waybills (both irrelevant for B2B).

Order of work

  1. Full URL scan and redirect map. Screaming Frog records every URL before migration, plus a mapping table of redirects accumulated over the site's life.
  2. Update Joomla, VirtueMart, extensions. Everything to the current versions. If a component is abandoned, we find an equivalent; as a last resort, we write a PHP replacement covering only what your project needs.
  3. Testing in the development environment. Nothing goes on live hosting untested: compatibility of extensions, template, and VirtueMart settings with the new Joomla and PHP.
  4. VirtueMart data migration. Products, categories, photos with product_id and slug preserved. When the URL structure changes (split or merged categories), new URLs come from the redirect map.
  5. Technical SEO. Hreflang, schema.org (Product, FAQPage), sitemap.xml, robots.txt, canonicals, CAPTCHA.
  6. Speed optimisation. CSS and JS compression, cache, image lazy loading, mobile PageSpeed.
  7. GSC monitoring. Googlebot sees the 301s, no 404s, no new duplicates, canonicals correct.
  8. Content and meta tag audit. Automatic check for spelling and syntax errors, mixed language versions in texts and meta tags, alignment of Title, Meta description, and image Alt with current SEO standards.
  9. Cloudflare. On every project today.
  10. Google AI Overviews readiness. Semantic heading structure and HowTo markup where applicable.

The items above are always included; the rest depends on your shop.

Why you can trust us

We have been running shops on Joomla and VirtueMart since 2009. Every migration done with our own hands, from Joomla 1.5 to version 4, then to version 5. Kyiv Stend (kyivstend.com.ua) is a live working example, not a presentation slide.

Results you will get

GSC Coverage Many pages Not Indexed Indexation normal
Product and FAQPage markup Missing or incomplete Covered on product pages and in FAQ
Security (PHP, extensions) PHP and extensions without security updates PHP 8.3 and current extensions
Mobile load speed Slow Scores in the green zone of PageSpeed

Frequently asked questions

How does "modernisation" differ from "redesign" from an SEO perspective?

A redesign changes the appearance: template, colours, blocks. Modernisation updates the technical side (CMS, PHP, extensions) while preserving URLs and with a redirect map.

Can Joomla and VirtueMart be updated without losing the URL structure?

Yes, if a URL scan is done before the start and a redirect map is built.

What happens to Google search positions during migration?

Around 4 weeks: two for the migration, two for GSC monitoring after launch. The timeframe depends on the number of extensions and language versions.

What does the online shop owner need to provide to start work?

A URL is enough to calculate the price.

How does the work happen: what do you do and what do we do?

You provide access, agree on the technical specification, and accept the result at each stage (audit, test version, final on hosting). All technical work is on us, with a report after each stage and no disappearing for weeks. After launch we monitor GSC Coverage for another 14 days.

Do you migrate VirtueMart to Magento?

Yes, we have done this several times for clients with a specific technical reason, though in most cases a full upgrade of Joomla, VirtueMart and PHP solves the same problem at lower cost and without losing rankings; Magento's only real advantage over VirtueMart is its modern SEO. If you have a specific reason (for example, merging with an existing Magento store), we do it in stages: data mapping, template rebuild, integrations rewrite.

Do you migrate VirtueMart to OpenCart?

Yes, and OpenCart is a much better target than Magento if you must switch. OpenCart 4 is roughly comparable to VirtueMart in complexity, and on the same PHP version they can do essentially the same things. The owner should first clarify what OpenCart offers that an upgraded VirtueMart cannot; in most cases the answer is nothing, and the issue is fixed inside VirtueMart. If an audit shows migration is genuinely needed, we do it, and the URL structure, product catalogue, customers, orders, and redirects all stay in place.

Will you be able to fix integrations in VirtueMart, for example with a payment system or CRM?

Yes. Integrations are one of the most common failure points: payment modules broken after a bank API update, CRM no longer receiving new clients, shipping calculators dead after a courier API change. During audit we determine whether they are written on outdated templates or protocols, and whether they can be fixed inside a modernisation project or need a separate one.

Do you migrate VirtueMart to Shopify?

Yes, when the owner wants to ditch PHP and move to SaaS. You stop maintaining a CMS but pay Shopify a monthly subscription plus a fee per transaction from day one, and you customise within Shopify's toolkit rather than freely. If the priority is marketing and sales, Shopify fits. We audit first and tell you whether Shopify makes sense or upgrading VirtueMart is the better call.
