I am on OpenCart 1.5. Is it realistic to upgrade, or is it easier to rebuild from scratch?
Realistic to upgrade. We do it in staged steps through the intermediate versions, with data, template, and extension migration between them. It takes longer and costs more than an upgrade from 3.x, but it is much cheaper and safer than a full rebuild. Your SEO, catalog, and customer base survive intact.
What do we do with paid extensions where the license expired or the vendor is gone?
We handle each one individually. Some we replace with current equivalents, some we rewrite as our own ocmod, some we drop because OpenCart 4 already covers the functionality out of the box. You get that list separately in the audit report.
Can I stay on OpenCart 3.x instead of moving to 4?
Yes, if you have heavy custom logic and a 4.x migration is too expensive right now. We can bring 3.x to a stable, secure, fast state, apply all critical patches, update PHP and the SEO layer. Just be aware that 3.x will eventually reach end of life, and moving to 4.x will become unavoidable.
Why do you not recommend moving to PrestaShop, Shopify or Magento 2?
Because a CMS migration is a separate large project with data migration, integration rewrites, several months of SEO position loss, and a budget several times larger than modernization. In most cases, a modernized OpenCart store covers your needs just as well as a new CMS, without any migration risk.
