If your VirtueMart shop is looking at Magento, there is usually a reason: extensions are dropping VirtueMart (PWT Sitemap 4.0.0 in February 2026), the default checkout lags current expectations, Core Web Vitals sit yellow to green at best, and every search for "which CMS is better than VirtueMart" answers "Magento". For a shop with several thousand products on cPanel hosting, the move is costly regardless of which answer is right.
About Magento
From the fourth quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2026 the number of active online shops worldwide dropped from around one hundred and sixty thousand to around one hundred and twelve thousand, minus thirty percent in just over four years (StoreLeads via mgt commerce). The platform loses around fourteen percent of shops per year.
Hosting. VirtueMart runs on shared hosting or a budget VPS with the rest of the Joomla site, up to twenty euros per month for several thousand products. Magento 2 does not run on shared hosting: it needs Elasticsearch or OpenSearch for catalogue search, Redis for sessions and cache, RabbitMQ for async queues, Varnish, Composer, PHP 8.1 or higher with specific compiled extensions, MySQL or MariaDB with sufficient memory, and separate media storage. Each component is infrastructure with its own config, logs, failure modes, security patches, and memory footprint. You need a dedicated server or cloud VPS, and a specialist to set it up and maintain it after every CMS update.
Updates. Every Magento security fix requires testing; every minor release is a full migration touching theme, extensions, modules, and core. VirtueMart updates install with one click; if something breaks, you roll back from an Akeeba backup and wait for the fix.
Extensions. A VirtueMart extension costs fifty euros; a Magento module starts from three hundred euros per year per project. A small shop with payment, shipping, and marketing modules easily accumulates hundreds of euros on extensions alone.
About SEO When Moving to a Different CMS
Changing CMS affects SEO regardless: URL structure changes, and even with a 301 redirect from every old URL to its new equivalent, Google must recrawl the new site and reassign positions. This typically takes weeks.
Magento URLs default to /product-slug.html and /category-slug.html without a category prefix; the old hierarchy can be preserved but requires explicit configuration, which most agencies skip. VirtueMart URLs come from Joomla routing (usually /shop/category-name/product-name, sometimes with an SKU as /shop/category-name/12-product-name) and have been indexed for years with accumulated backlinks. Two options: accept the standard Magento structure with 301 redirects, or budget extra development to preserve URLs on the new site.
Where Do Online Shops Go After Magento?
Most go to Shopify; larger projects go to Medusa or Commercetools; small and medium shops return to WooCommerce to sell from a WordPress blog.
Adobe Commerce 2.4.4 reached end of extended support on 14 April 2026, 2.4.5 on 11 August 2026. Magento Open Source 2.4.4 reached end of standard support in April 2025. Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 is supported only until August 2027. You are planning to move to a CMS whose current version stops receiving critical fixes in a year and a half.
VirtueMart's best days are also behind it. Joomla has slipped to sixth place among world CMS platforms, holding around one and a half percent of the market (down from second place at its peak), and some extensions are dropping VirtueMart. But Joomla and VirtueMart continue to receive versions with security fixes, and the core team is active. My personal view: moving from one ageing CMS to another ageing CMS is not a plan. If you are going to move, only move to modern technology (expensive and not always technically feasible).
When Migration to Magento Is Justified
Many product listings with complex attributes. Magento was built for a large and complex catalogue: attribute sets, dozens of variants per product, prices for different customer groups, full text search for both shop and filters.
B2B commerce. B2B clients expect pricing at account level (not a standard cart), discount requests on bulk orders, corporate accounts with multiple managers and seller chat, past order history, repeat orders, invoice download, and access management. Magento supports price groups, approval workflows, corporate accounts, tiered access rights, and payment via invoice. Adobe Commerce (paid) adds more.
Multiple shops on one backend. Different brands, domains, countries, currencies, and tax regimes with a shared catalogue and one order processing mechanism, all under one admin panel. VirtueMart has no equivalent.
The Alternative to Moving to a Different CMS
Modernising VirtueMart is simpler and cheaper, all else being equal.
PHP and Joomla updates. PHP first, then Joomla and VirtueMart, each step tested. Done correctly, several weeks of work brings the shop to current versions that will receive updates for several more years.
Extension audit. Every VirtueMart shop runs SEO, payment, shipping, review, feed exporter, and business-specific modules. An audit checks which are still supported and where a working replacement exists (PWT Sitemap 4.0.0 dropped VirtueMart in February 2026).
Core Web Vitals and technical SEO. A shop built five or more years ago does not meet Core Web Vitals by default and has no structured data. Fixes on VirtueMart: template optimisation for Largest Contentful Paint, layout shift stabilisation for Cumulative Layout Shift, deferred JavaScript for Interaction to Next Paint, images in WebP or AVIF, cache configuration. Schema.org for products, categories, articles, breadcrumbs, and organisation is added through template edits, which qualifies for rich snippets and increases citation by ChatGPT Search and Perplexity. None of this requires changing CMS.
Cart and checkout modernisation. The default VirtueMart cart is a source of conversion losses. Modern expectations: checkout without account creation, mobile keyboard optimisation, local payment methods (Bizum in Spain, iDEAL in the Netherlands, Blik in Poland). Pays for itself through recovered conversion.
Proof that this works. Our own shop Kyiv Stend (kyivstend.com.ua) has been running on Joomla and VirtueMart for more than eleven years, modernised several times without changing CMS: Core Web Vitals green, full structured data, rebuilt cart, multilingual content, modern payment methods.
If You Want to Leave PHP E-commerce
Some owners looking at Magento are really choosing to leave PHP shops on their own hosting for a cloud service like Shopify. If maintaining a PHP site is no longer the work you want to do, Shopify fits better: no hosting, no security patches, no extension compatibility, budget shifts to marketing. In return: a monthly fee plus commission on each sale, and limits for shops with their own business logic and local ERP integrations. We handle Shopify migrations for owners who have chosen that path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Magento actually better than VirtueMart?
No. Both work well; Magento costs more.
Can VirtueMart be modernised without migration?
Yes: PHP and Joomla updates, current VirtueMart, dead extensions replaced, Core Web Vitals, structured data for modern SEO and LLM, cart with local European payment methods. URL structure and SEO preserved.
When is migration from VirtueMart to Magento genuinely justified?
Tens of thousands of listings with complex attributes; real B2B with negotiated pricing; multiple shops on one backend.
What is Hyvä Themes and does it solve Magento's performance problems?
Hyvä replaces the standard Luma frontend with Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, giving faster page loads and better Core Web Vitals. It fits shops already on Magento. It does not change the analysis for VirtueMart: if Magento does not fit your scale, a better frontend on top does not fix that.
