A Joomla and VirtueMart shop owner who starts thinking about moving to Shopify usually comes with the same trigger. The payment module stopped working after upgrading PHP to 8.3. A competitor's cart opens in under a second, while theirs loads in four. A developer said that PWT Sitemap version 4.0.0 in February 2026 dropped VirtueMart support, and asked what to do next.
The owner then searches Google for virtuemart to shopify migration and gets identical results: migration in three steps, tool, prices, case study. Nobody asked whether moving is the right choice at all. Moving from VirtueMart to Shopify is not a site update. It is a model change: from owning a site on your own hosting to a rented platform.
What Shopify actually is
A VirtueMart shop on your own hosting or VPS is yours: you chose the hosting, source code and database are accessible, a developer works when needed. Costs are fixed: hosting plus developer on demand.
A Shopify shop is a subscription. You do not own the source code and access stops the moment you stop paying. If something breaks, you open a ticket; if you need a new feature, you install an app. Costs grow with turnover: subscription plus apps plus a percentage of every sale.
Why VirtueMart owners look at Shopify
Extensions are dropping VirtueMart support. PWT Sitemap version 4.0.0 in February 2026 dropped it. Modules you depend on may not receive updates for PHP 8.4 or 8.5.
The default cart looks dated. Shopify shops set the visual standard for checkout: payment on one page, Apple Pay and Google Pay visible immediately, address autocomplete, purchase without an account. If your VirtueMart cart requires account creation or pushes the buyer through three separate pages before entering card details, this shows up in your abandoned cart report.
The Joomla core requires work. If your shop is still on Joomla 3, you are on a version at end of life: no security patches, no compatibility with modern PHP. The path from Joomla 3 through Joomla 4 to Joomla 5 is complex, and VirtueMart 4 requires Joomla 4 or 5, so upgrades are linked.
There are fewer VirtueMart developers than before. Finding one who knows VirtueMart and charges a reasonable price has become harder. Shopify has grown a generation of theme and app specialists who never touched server side PHP e-commerce.
Who Shopify is the right answer for
You have no developer and you do not want one. Some owners could hire one but choose not to, because the business does not benefit from it. On Shopify you install an app or commission a specialist for a specific task with a defined outcome.
Your catalogue is straightforward. Products are described by a standard set of attributes (size, colour, material). Signals pointing the other way: pricing depends on many attributes, deep category trees where a product belongs to three levels at once, configurable products where selecting one option changes the available options for another. All of this works only through apps or requires Shopify Plus.
You sell directly to end customers without B2B. Direct sales are where Shopify excels. Wholesale features have improved, but they live in Shopify Plus.
You want to sell across multiple channels from one admin panel. Instagram, TikTok Shop, Facebook Shop and offline through Shopify POS are all connected to one catalogue and one inventory. VirtueMart can do this too, but each channel is a separate project with a separate module.
You accept that you cannot change everything you want. Shopify's architecture cannot be changed. Non standard features or custom cart logic are only possible on Shopify Plus and with a developer who knows Liquid.
Who Shopify will not work for
Shopify Payments does not operate in your country. Shopify's own payment system is officially unavailable in many countries, including Ukraine. Without it, Shopify charges an additional fee (up to two percent on Basic) on every sale, on top of the external gateway's fee.
Your ERP, warehouse or accounting integrations work through direct database queries or PHP scripts. Shops that sync with a local ERP via direct MySQL queries, or with accounting software through a PHP script reading the orders table on a schedule, cannot move to Shopify without rewriting those integrations on top of the Shopify Admin API.
Your primary model is B2B. Companies, locations and deferred payment are available in Shopify across all plans. But the options needed for real B2B (catalogue tied to a specific company, instalment payments, different catalogues for different customers) only exist in Shopify Plus.
Your shop runs on logic that Shopify cannot replicate. Cart level discount rules combining three promotions, a delivery calculator that pulls rates from a carrier API in real time, buyer group based pricing. Some of this can be expressed through Shopify Functions and Checkout UI Extensions, but those tools live in Shopify Plus.
What Shopify actually costs
Plans are public (approximate): Starter around $5 per month (sales through social networks without a full site), Basic around $39 (entry level with a site), Grow around $105 (full featured shop), Shopify Plus a separate tier for large projects. Annual billing is lower.
On top of the plan, the bill is a stack of charges: apps (owners often run a dozen for multilingual, reviews, loyalty, cart recovery, around ten dollars each), payment processing (two to three percent plus a fixed charge per transaction), the Shopify surcharge without Shopify Payments, currency conversion, a paid theme purchase. The actual bill ends up noticeably higher than the published plan price.
Whether Shopify is cheaper than VirtueMart depends on how your sales are structured. On Shopify the bill grows with turnover. On VirtueMart costs are mostly fixed (hosting), with the developer brought in as needed. A precise calculation for your shop makes sense in a consultation, when sales figures, country of payment processing and required features are visible.
What happens to SEO when you migrate
Shopify's URL structure is not negotiable. Every product URL contains /products/, every category URL /collections/, every content page /pages/. These prefixes cannot be removed; Shopify support does not make exceptions. After migration every URL in your shop will change.
Your project needs a complete 301 redirect table covering every URL that has ever ranked in Google, not only the URLs currently in the Joomla menu. Product URLs that changed years ago and merged category URLs are still in the index and still collect inbound links. Whatever the table misses returns a 404 and drops out.
Recovery takes months. Google needs time to crawl each URL, follow the redirect and recalculate rankings. A well executed migration recovers in a few months with a temporary dip. A poorly executed migration extends that dip.
Our experience with Kyiv Stend. We run our own shop at kyivstend.com.ua on VirtueMart for eleven years and have seen what happened to its URL structure. The Shopify redirect table for Kyiv Stend today would map thousands of product URLs and hundreds of category URLs; we can assemble it precisely because the source is still in our hands. For shops like ours, I recommend modernisation on your own hosting.
What does not transfer in a migration
Customer passwords. Password hashes do not transfer between platforms. Customers receive a password reset link on their first login. Notify customers in advance by email so the reset does not look like phishing.
Joomla content. Blog posts, About pages, FAQ, landing pages for ad campaigns, the contact page, navigation menus. Shopify is a shop only, so content from Joomla is transferred manually into Shopify's Blog section or kept on a separate site.
Your VirtueMart extensions. The logic of specific modules has no direct equivalents. Each required feature is checked separately: standard Shopify, an app, or custom development.
Data out of Shopify. The standard CSV export outputs the catalogue with links to CDN images, customer records and order history. It does not export subscription states from third party subscription apps, loyalty point balances, data stored in metafields, or blog content in a portable format. A Shopify theme exports as a zip, but outside Shopify it does not work without rework.
What we do when migrating to Shopify
- Pre migration audit: current shop, catalogue structure, list of extensions, integrations, order volume, URL structure. Output: scope of work with a fixed price.
- Complete redirect table from old URLs to new Shopify URLs. Every ranking URL gets a target assembled from the sitemap, Google Search Console, backlink data and historical URLs. Validation after the switchover.
- Transfer of catalogue, orders and customers. Validation after transfer.
- Indexation monitoring in Google Search Console for the first six weeks, regular error reports, immediate response to broken redirects.
- Rewriting ERP, warehouse and accounting integrations on top of the Shopify Admin API.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify cost per month for a shop in the EU? More than the published plan. Exact amount in a consultation.
Can EU VAT numbers be validated in Shopify? Yes, through the taxes and payment profile section in the admin panel.
What happens to SEO after the migration? With a complete redirect table, traffic dips in the first month and recovers over a few months. With an incomplete table the dip lasts longer.
Can customer passwords be transferred from VirtueMart to Shopify? No. Customers receive a password reset link on their first login.
